A Stirring Song

I'll be honest.  I forget most Sundays to put A Stirring Song posts together.  Oops.  But today, I was obnoxiously singing along to the song below and thought "this is today's stirring song!" and the post was born without any 'reminders.'  Yay!

I love The Mamas & the Papas.  I am well obsessed with their insane vocals and I just love the warm feeling their music evokes in me.  I particularly adore Mama Cass Elliot's vocal, and the song I've had on repeat all day and have been bellowing with all the confidence of a professional singer (I don't have the vocal, mind) is 'It's Getting Better.'  Ahh, this song is a dream.  Listen!  You'll agree I promise!

A Stirring Song

This week's stirring song has basically been on repeat with me all week.  It's such an inspirational and get-up-and-go track.  Plus it's a Beach Boys track, which makes it instantly amazing anyway.

The song in question is Long Promised Road from their Surf's Up album.  It is also Carl Wilson's first solo composition, and it is truly beautiful.  It'll definitely get you up on your feet to dance as well as lift you from a funk!

I love the Beach Boys.  It's a pretty straight forward love.  They're incredible.  I love them as a result.  So many of their songs mean THE WORLD to me.  I'm guessing you'll see a few of their tracks as Stirring Songs, because they are just that.  Stirring.

A Stirring Song

It has been crazy sunny this weekend.  The daylight saving added to this, as we will now have later sunsets.  Isn't it funny how people are so much more cheerful when it's sunny outside?  That's definitely the case in the UK anyway.  The only major downside is how everyone wants to get practically naked, which I think is just bizarre!  It's only British sunshine! Not unbearable desert temperatures.  Crazy folks!

Today's Stirring Song iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis (not sure why I incorporated the build up there)...

...King of the World by First Aid Kit.  I know it's the second First Aid Kit song in only a few weeks, but I guess I'm on a FAK kick or something.  I do really like their new album!

I wrote a post a few weeks back after I went to their gig in Bristol (and got to meet them, and have my photo with them!  See the post linked above to see my silly chops grinning at chillin' with them!) and this song from their new album is a current favourite.  It's my singalong song.  I know I'd TOTALLY fit in with their band if they only gave me a chance!  Tee hee!

I also love the styling and 70s feel to their new album artwork.  It's pretty dreamy!

A Stirring Song: Boat Music

Just over a week ago I got to see the incredible First Aid Kit play at Bristol Thekla, which is such a cool venue.  It's a boat!  Klara's guitar kept going out of tune, and she was convinced it was because the gig was technically in the water!  if you ever get a chance to go to a gig or event at the Thekla, I highly recommend it due to its special atmosphere.  It really ads to the feel of it all!

In light of this, this week's stirring song is of course a First Aid Kit track.  One of my favourites from their first album The Big Black and the Blue is the track Ghost Town.  Beautiful!

A Stirring Song

Due to laziness caused by illness, I was not in the mood to faff with blogging this weekend, if I'm honest.  Brain. Was. Mush.  Very. Mushy.

However!  Super Furry Animals came to the rescue with Golden Retriever.  I think this is the second SFA track to feature as a Stirring Song, but it's well worth it!  It totally got me up and moving and out of my funk this weekend.  Stupid mystery abdominal pains.

A Stiring Song

Hi lovelies.

I hope you've had a lovely weekend.  After a really busy weekend last week, this week was particularly low key.  Never mind!  I did get a little painting and film time in, so that's good.

Anyway, time for this week's stirring song, which is Alcoholiday by Teenage Fanclub.

In my opinion, I am Teenage Fanclub's number 1 fan, but then I would think that of myself.  Their music is beyond incredible and they are a great example of how amazing talent comes out of Scotland (other favourite Scottish exports include Mogwai and Irvine Welsh).

Their song Alcoholiday from the album Bandwagonesque is superb, and I sing it so loudly each time I hear it.  (And it was actually the inspiration for one of my paintings last night).  I was reeeeally lucky to see Teenage Fanclub perform Bandwagonesque in its entirety a few years back, and it was one of the most magical gigs I've ever been to.  Mesmerising!  I'll never forget it.  (The Don't Look Back series of gigs All Tomorrow's Parties put on are often musical highlights for me!)

A Stirring Song

This week's song is Flood by The Acorn.  I really like this band, and have relaly fallen for their (kinda old now) album Glory Hope Mountain.  Isn't that an incredibly positive title for an album?!  Their music is rich and romantic, peppered with beautiful harmonies and pretty instrumental details.  Lovely, lovely, lovely.

A Stirring Song

This week's stirring song is....You and Me by Penny and the Quarters, a complete gem from the Blue Valentine soundtrack.  I guess they're somewhat of a 'lost' soul band (which is so sad) but this unreleased demo is such treat anyway.  It is also insanely well used on the aforementioned soundtrack, and I urge you to check it out!

A Stirring Song

This week I have mostly been listening to..........

Hideaway by the Olivia Tremor Control, from their Black Foliage album.

This song is very, very, very special to me.  It inspired a painting series I've made and I hold the lyrics as close to my heart as you possibly could.  I'll let you listen so that you can see (or should that be hear?!) what I mean.  This song is the only way to end a (very challenging) year, and to enter a (hopeful and positive) year.  My greatest fear is fear itself, and this song makes me want to eradicate this feeling.  

I can't wait to see The Olivia Tremor Control in March (postponed from November) and will be beyond crossing my fingers that this track is on the set list.

A Stirring Song

I LOVE SFA.  Not only are they Welsh (as am I) and incredibly nice guys, they're beyond amazing.  They're also extremely inspiring and creative playing live.

A Stirring Song

Hi lovelies.

Time for my second A Stirring Song post.  (I'm making it a Sunday thing it seems).

This week's is an Animal Collective track, My Girls.  

I really adore this track and it makes me want to dance and clap and flail my arms around like a fool.

It also makes me want to find someone who wants to sort out four walls for me too.

'A Stirring Song' is a little feature I'm hoping to develop here on the blog.  Music is so important to me, and I thought every Sunday I'd share a song that has been inspiring me during the week (i.e. on repeat!)

I really love Sparklehorse, and every album has so many standout tracks.  It makes me so sad to think that Mark Linkous felt so helpless inside that he didn't want to live.  A real artist, poet and moving songwriter.
